Kipling's work was enormously popular in the Soviet Union.The two grand masters of modern Russian children's literature, Kornei Chukovsky (1882-1969) and Samuil Marshak (1887-1964), joined forces to render into Russian Kipling's story "How the Whale Got His Throat" from Just So Stories (1902). An early follower of Vladimir Lebedev, Krimmer (1900-1974) was one of the most inventive Russian children's book illustrators of the early twentieth century. This book is a companion to the earlier Kipling-Chukovsky-Marshak collaboration Slonenok (1921), a translation of "How the Elephant Got His Trunk," and illustrated by Lebedev.
