Jean Joseph Bernard was born in Luneville and prospered as a calligrapher in Paris where he beame well known for his portraits of artists, writers and nobility. His 1781 portraits of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette are in the museum in Luneville and an album of portrait drawings is in the Musee Carnevalet, Paris.
