Britton, p. 168
Known for being the creator of Gonzo journalism, Thompson is best known for his novels Hell's Angels (1966), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971), and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail of '72 (1972). The mountains and owl depicted in Thompson's self-portrait are reminiscent of the Colorado landscape, where the author resided for many years.
"As I was putting the pages together at Random House (for Self-Portrait) in 1976, I saw Thompson working on something in another office and asked my editor, Bob Loomis, to make the introduction. What you see is the result. The date suggests it was maybe the last to make the cut". -- Burt Britton
