Guston was a painter and printmaker in the New York School. Working alongside Abstract expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning during the 1960s, Guston helped to lead the transition from Abstract expressionism to Neo-expressionism, abandoning pure abstraction for a cartoonish, yet literal rendering of his surroundings. Self-portraits depicting Guston's true likeness are virtually non-existant, save for the metaphoric self-portraits of Guston as a Klansman from the 1930s or as a cartoon character.
