Saul Bellow is the only author to have won the National Book Award three times for The Adventures of Augie March (1954), Herzog (1965), and Mr. Sammler's Planet (1971). Bellow was also awarded the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Humboldt's Gift and the Nobel Prize for Literature.
"When I asked Bellow some years after he'd pictured himself for me if I could use his S-P in the book, after he said 'Yes', I asked him why he was being so nice to me, and he smiled and answered, 'After all, what does does it cost me?'" -- Burt Britton
