Gordon Parks is an important photo-essayist and director who, as a recipient of a fellowship with the Farm Security Administration, took the well known photograph American Gothic, Washington D. C. Parks is also remembered for his groundbreaking 1968 novel and film The Learning Tree as well as Shaft (1971).
