first edition of gertrude stein’s only children’s book in the dust jacket. When she became editor of Young Scott Books, Margaret Wise Brown contacted famous writers she admired and Gertrude Stein submitted The World is Round. She did not write down to children but used the same distinctive style of her adult work. The title page reprints her immortal words, “A rose is a rose is a rose.” The shocking pink and blue pictures were provided by modern painter Clement Hurd. He went on to illustrate Margaret Wise Brown’s nursery classic Good Night Moon (1947).
